Mission Statement
Discovery Trails Early Learning Academy prepares students to be lifelong learners by releasing the inherent capacities of each child through a balanced curriculum of both teacher-directed and student-directed activities.Statement of Philosophy
The students at Discovery Trails are offered ample opportunities for experiential learning. When developing curriculum, our experienced and degreed teachers create ways in which children are participating in the lesson, not just listening. Whether it is using estimation, preparing graphs, utilizing language (both spoken and written), or exercising problem solving skills, students determine what path the lesson will take. Each teachable moment emphasizes active involvement in physical, social, emotional, cognitive and language development. At the same time, academics are encouraged in mathematics, visual and performing arts, social studies, science, foreign language, physical education, computers, and emergent reading and writing in a developmentally appropriate way. Our curriculum is a balance between planned activities that help children progress toward a defined goal and those unplanned experiences that emerge from a child’s interest. This is achieved through theme-based instruction that promotes interdisciplinary learning, active problem solving, cooperative-based activities and independent exploration in learning centers. Individualized attention is also offered to capitalize on each child’s strengths and challenges.
A good portion of the curriculum at Discovery Trails is in life skills. This provides a solid foundation for the academic curriculum. Challenging students to find their own solutions to everyday problems helps them to develop life skills. This idea fosters confidence. The more the children believe in themselves and practice these skills, the more confident they become. As a child asks questions or requests help, our loving and patient teachers guide them to find their own answers. This theory enables children to learn to communicate effectively and listen to others, to take care of their physical and emotional well being, to encourage self-awareness, to make appropriate decisions and to help children learn to identify goals and understand which tools are needed to reach them.
In addition to teacher directed instruction, Discovery Trails Early Learning Academy makes use of learning centers within the classrooms. Learning centers encourage children to make their own discoveries in the way they learn best. Learning centers are recognized by current research as being the most effective way for young children to gain knowledge. Each center in the classroom is purposefully planned with activities that promote exploration and skill development. They also offer theme-based curriculum, active problem solving solutions, independent exploration, descriptive and receptive communication, and hands-on experiences.
